“Rose” is one of the most talked-about titles from the latest Berlinale. Sandra Hüller received the Silver Bear for the title role. The actress plays a mysterious soldier, and for the role underwent a physical transformation, hiding her femininity beneath a men's costume. In the character, she combines roughness with gentleness and humor.
The story unfolds in 17th-century Germany. A war-scarred soldier arrives at a remote village, claiming to be the heir to an abandoned farm. The residents initially regard him with suspicion, but he quickly wins their favor. The documents he brings, his remarkable diligence, and his readiness to submit to the strict rules of the Protestant community persuade them.
In the cruel realities of the era, someone stripped of rights can only be themselves in disguise. Therefore, the title character must carefully conceal their true nature and identity.
