Egon Schiele. Beyond Taboo

Dir. Michele Mally | Italy | 2026 “Egon Schiele. Beyond Taboo” explores what shaped the artist’s inner world. We visit decadent Vienna and Art Nouveau Prague, which he fled for the provinces, reaching Český Krumlov and Neulengbach in Austria, where he scandalized the locals. We get to know his complicated relationships with women: his fascination with his sister Gerti, a passionate affair with his muse Valerie Neuzil, and a distant marriage to Edith Harms. A key figure in this biography is also his mother, indifferent to her son’s talent. “I painted so that I would be noticed,” Schiele wrote. He worked in an era of questioning bourgeois norms and flourishing art, in the shadow of a collapsing empire. It is no wonder the filmmakers emphasize the similarities between the artist and Franz Kafka. Both were preoccupied with the link between sex and death, lived with a sense of impending catastrophe, and radically changed the landscape of painting and literature. Filled with masterpieces, “Egon Schiele. Beyond Taboo” presents treasures from the world’s largest collection of Schiele’s paintings, at the Leopold Museum in Vienna. Nudity no longer shocks anyone. What Schiele truly exposes is the body’s helplessness against the passage of time. And that remains a powerful taboo. Safe shopping at Bilety24.
