The programme explores how the relationship between lyricism and virtuosity develops in violin literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. In Beethoven’s Romance in G major, the violin engages in a lyrical dialogue with the orchestra, embracing the aesthetics of Romanticism. Karłowicz’s Violin Concerto earned acclaim for its effective solo part and subtle orchestral writing. In his only violin concerto, Sibelius set technically demanding challenges for the soloist. Franz Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie carries the tradition of pastiche into the 20th century, using Bizet’s operatic themes as a platform for virtuosic display. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, meanwhile, reflects classical balance and serenity. Despite its mastery of construction and orchestration, it often remains overshadowed by its neighbouring symphonies.
