Shanty-themed St. Nicholas' Day events led by Henryk Czekała “Szkot” have become a tradition in Wrocław. On 6 December, the Scottish Troupe will perform at Piwnica Starego Klasztoru. Czekała normally leads the band “Mechanicy Shanty” and previously co-founded “Ryczące Dwudziestki.”
The Scottish Troupe has no fixed lineup, as it operates in an open format. Szkot invites different musicians, so the stage may feature a duo, trio, or quartet, and sometimes the leader performs solo. A trio is the most common setup. The program stays the same: it always features Czekała's favorite songs, hence the recital title “Moje ukochane...” (“My Favorites...”).
The repertoire includes shanties (sea work songs) and sailing songs. Czekała wrote some of them, and they are known from the repertoires of Mechanicy Shanty and Ryczące Dwudziestki. Others were written by, among others, Jerzy Porębski, Witek Zamojski, Tomek Opoka, and Janusz Sikorski. The songs will be performed in new arrangements, sung and interpreted differently. They include:
- “Hiszpańskie dziewczyny”
- “Cztery piwka”
- “Umbriaga”
- “Jacht rock'n'roll”
- “Klipry”
- “Wzgórza Walii”
- “Maui”
- “Miasto”
Well-known songs appear in bluegrass, blues, country, and folk versions. According to the announcement, Szkot quickly connects with the audience and gets them singing along. Performing will be:
- Henryk Czekała “Szkot” from Bytom – vocals, guitar
- Kamil Piotrowski from Wrocław – mandolin, backing vocals
- Jacek Kądziołka from Bytom – acoustic bass, guitar, backing vocals
