“Fatherland,” directed by Paweł Pawlikowski, is a 2026 film co-produced by Poland, Germany, Italy and France. The screening is part of Polish Film Day. The leading roles are played by Hanns Zischler as Thomas Mann and Sandra Hüller as his daughter Erika.
The film depicts the relationship between the writer, a Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, and his daughter, an actress and writer. The story is set at the height of the Cold War.
Father and daughter make a difficult, emotionally charged journey by black Buick through a devastated Germany. The route runs from Frankfurt, under American control, to Weimar, under Soviet influence. It is Mann's first return to his homeland since the war, following his earlier, difficult decision to emigrate to the United States.
