The first day of the Jazz Nad Widawą festival is dedicated to silent cinema. Two films by Charlie Chaplin will be screened, with Sebastian Łobos, a pianist and silent film accompanist, playing live piano accompaniment.
The accompaniment is performed live. It is based on improvisation and draws on inspirations from ragtime, classical and film music. Live music was an integral part of screenings from the era when cinema had no sound yet, and this live score aims to evoke the atmosphere of cinemas from a hundred years ago.
The event will explore the historical connections between improvised music and film art, as well as the relationship between image and sound.
