Ethno Jazz Festival invites you on March 21 to the Sala Gotycka at Stary Klasztor for the first Polish staging of JOSEPHINE BAKER SHOW. The performance is a tribute to Josephine Baker, stage performer, activist and fighter for freedom. It blends styles such as chanson, jazz, swing, cabaret, electro swing and burlesque. Alice Francis plays the role of Josephine.
Freda Josephine Baker was an American-French dancer, actress, singer and intelligence agent. She grew up in the slums of St. Louis and built her career as a revue dancer and singer, becoming the first Black celebrity with global reach. In Paris she was known as a stage scandal and a muse of avant-garde artists such as Picasso and Le Corbusier. She was also a member of the French Resistance, a counterintelligence agent, an officer of Free France and an anti-racist activist who believed in the brotherhood of all people regardless of race or religion. According to the announcement, she shaped how we understand entertainment today, and her love for the stage and its audience is the core of the show.
Alice Francis works on the international electro swing and neo swing scene. Her music combines jazz, swing, charleston, electronica, pop and hip-hop, bridging the 1920s and the present day. On stage she is joined by:
- a live band,
- two dancers.
The artist performs Josephine Baker's international hits and guides the audience through the decades, from the 1920s to the 1970s. The story of Baker's life is told through music, from her first steps on stage to her influence on the modern electro swing scene. The program includes both classics from Baker's repertoire and contemporary pop interpretations. The whole is introduced with the slogan: “Long live revue theatre – curtain up!”
