As part of JGJ FESTIVAL - Jeleniogórskie Gwiazdy Jazzu, the Maciej Obara Quartet feat. Mathias Eick will perform, presenting a new, expanded edition of the Polish-Scandinavian ensemble. Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick, described as one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary European jazz, joins saxophonist Maciej Obara's quartet. All the artists are associated with ECM Records.
Lineup:
The project opens a new chapter in the band's history. The quartet will present fresh compositions that expand its sonic world. Previously, ECM released three albums by the group: Unloved, Three Crowns and Frozen Silence. Now the band explores new spaces of sound, form and emotion.
Mathias Eick is the author of the albums The Door, Skala, Midwest, Ravensburg and When We Leave. He brings poetic sensitivity and a distinctive, spacious trumpet tone to the group, which interacts with the expressive, emotionally charged sound of Obara's saxophone. The description frames this meeting as a clash of temperaments and aesthetics: Scandinavian lyricism and Central European intensity. The music is rooted in improvisation and open to space and silence.
Obara's new compositions serve as the starting point for jointly creating forms rich in dynamics and emotional tension. They give rise to a sonic story about freedom, focus and mutual listening. The project continues the idea of musical dialogue across borders, a hallmark of Obara and his band's work for years.
