“Three Farewells” is the latest film by Isabel Coixet, a meditation on parting, memory, and the art of letting go. The leads are Alba Rohrwacher as Marta, a teacher, and Elio Germano as Antonio, an ambitious chef.
The bond between the two protagonists, a long-term relationship, ends after a trivial argument. Antonio throws himself into building his career, while Marta grieves the lost love and searches for support. Soon it becomes clear that her lack of appetite and energy has a deeper cause than emotional disappointment, and her life changes dramatically. Marta begins to see the world differently: food takes on a special flavor, music moves her in a new way, and her longing for happiness awakens a desire to live without fear.
The director based the film on bestselling short stories by Italian writer Michela Murgia. It observes gestures, relationships, and everyday rituals that take on new meaning once time starts to count. It avoids melodramatic clichés and, in its intimate style, presents human life as “a beautiful accident.”
