Benedictine Convent in Wołów

Wołów
About Benedictine Convent in Wołów

An enclosed Benedictine convent on Poznańska Street in Wołów, from 1884, with a chapel dedicated to St Joseph open to residents.

The Benedictine Convent in Wołów, on Poznańska Street 13, consists of a convent house and a convent chapel, and its history goes back to 1884.

Foundation, the Sisters of St Charles Borromeo, the Benedictines

The building was constructed in 1884 as the Catholic foundation "St. Joseph-Stift", and the chapel was added in the early 1930s. From 1898 to 1945 it was home to the Sisters of St Charles Borromeo from Trzebnica. After the war the building stood abandoned, until in 1958 Armenian Benedictine nuns moved in. In 1961, under Abbess Jadwiga Jóżak, the community switched to the Latin rite.

An enclosed convent with an open chapel

The Benedictine sisters live in enclosure, but the convent chapel dedicated to St Joseph is open to the residents of Wołów. Mass is celebrated here every day, and the sisters sing the Liturgy of the Hours, in which people from outside, including pupils of the nearby secondary school, may take part alongside them.
