About Chałupki Hillfort

Ruins of the medieval Novum Castrum stronghold from the late 13th century, with surviving walls and tower foundations, near Paczków.

Chałupki Hillfort is the remains of a stronghold from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, in Ząbkowice County near Paczków. Fragments of the perimeter walls and the foundations of a tower have survived on the site, so the place can be explored on your own.

From Novum Castrum to destruction

The hillfort was probably founded on the initiative of Duke Bolko I at the end of the 13th century; the first mention of it dates from 1295. At the time the stronghold was known as Novum Castrum, and its seat was held by the castellan Piotr Lubnowski. In 1509 the site was destroyed on the orders of the Bishop of Wrocław.

What can be seen today

Remains of the perimeter walls, about 2 metres thick, have survived, along with traces of the foundations of a round tower. The mound is surrounded by a moat and an earthen rampart, clearly legible in the terrain.
