A group of granite rocks in the Izera Mountains in Szklarska Poręba, with a rocking boulder and old legends of treasure.
Chybotek is a group of granite rocks in the Izera Mountains, within Szklarska Poręba. It takes its name from the largest boulder, which despite its size can be rocked, and its shape is linked to old legends of a hidden treasure.
The rocks are located on the border of Szklarska Poręba Średnia and Dolna, on the south-eastern slopes of the Wysoki Grzbiet (High Ridge) of the Izera Mountains, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship.
The highest-lying boulder is about 4 metres in diameter and, despite its size, can be rocked, which is the greatest curiosity of this place. The whole rock group is built of Karkonosze granite.
Until 1945 the rock bore the German name Zuckerschale, meaning "Sugar Bowl", referring to its shape. The Polish name Chybotek comes from the boulder's characteristic rocking motion.
According to local legends of Walloon treasure hunters, the rock blocked the entrance to an underground cave said to hold a hidden treasury. The history of Chybotek is also linked to tales of the Spirit of the Mountains, who according to belief ruled over the whole of the Karkonosze range.
