Dmowski Bridge

Wrocław
About Dmowski Bridge

Dmowski Bridge, the first post-war river crossing in Wrocław, connects Kępa Mieszczańska with the western part of the city and carries car and tram traffic.

Dmowski Bridge is the first river crossing built from scratch in Wrocław after the Second World War. The northern bridge was opened on 4 June 1992, and the whole crossing reached full readiness in 1994. The bridge is a monument of technology and remains in operation, carrying car and tram traffic.

Construction

The crossing consists of three parallel bridges: two road bridges, each 12 metres wide, and one tram bridge 7.5 metres wide, running between them. All three have two spans, with lengths of 81 and 45 metres. The bridge was designed by Zygmunt Burski.

What it connects

The bridge connects Kępa Mieszczańska across the Southern Oder with the western part of Wrocław and forms a section of the dual carriageway leading from the city centre towards Zielona Góra.

Patron

The bridge's patron is Roman Dmowski, a politician of the interwar period associated with the National Democracy movement.

Tram route

Between the bridges and along the approach streets Długa and Romana Dmowskiego, space was reserved for a new tram route towards Popowice, construction of which began in May 2019. Because the trams of the 1990s, when the bridge was designed and built, were lighter than those used today, the tram bridge's structure had to be reinforced. The work was completed in spring 2023, and in April successful static and dynamic load tests were carried out. Regular tram services across the bridge began on 15 May 2023.

Practical information

  • Location: the Szczepin district of Wrocław, over the Southern Oder, connecting Kępa Mieszczańska with the western part of the city.
  • Getting there: the bridge carries car and tram traffic towards Popowice; it can also be crossed on foot.
  • What to see: three parallel bridge structures (two road and one tram) and a view of the Southern Oder; nearby lie Tumski Bridge and Grunwaldzki Bridge, and from there it is already close to the Market Square.
