"Fencer" Fountain

The "Fencer" Fountain stands on Uniwersytecki Square in Wrocław, right in front of the University of Wrocław building, and is one of the symbols of the university.

Design by a Berlin professor

The fountain was designed by Hugo Lederer, a professor at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. It was installed on Uniwersytecki Square on 26 November 1904, and has since accompanied the university's main building as part of the square's surroundings.

A symbol of the university

The fountain is one of the recognisable landmarks of the University of Wrocław, alongside the main building itself and the neighbouring academic buildings standing on the same branch of the Oder.

Practical information

• The fountain stands on Uniwersytecki Square, in the Old Town district of Wrocław.
• It is close to Wrocław Town Hall, the Market Square and Tumski Bridge, so it fits naturally into a walk around the Old Town.
• Also nearby is the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław, which belongs to the same university.
