Kanigóra Nature Reserve

Bystrzyca
About Kanigóra Nature Reserve

A forest nature reserve in the Oława municipality, protecting since 1958 a fragment of multi-species riparian forest characteristic of the Oder valley.

The Kanigóra Nature Reserve lies in the Oława municipality, in Oława County, near Bystrzyca, on the Oder. It covers a small fragment of riparian forest, one of those that once covered the whole river valley.

Purpose of protection and history of the reserve

The reserve was established by an ordinance of the Minister of Forestry and Timber Industry of 20 March 1958. Its purpose was to preserve, for educational and cultural reasons, a several-hundred-year-old, well-preserved, multi-species riparian forest with the features of a natural community, characteristic of the Oder valley. The founding act set the area of the reserve at 4.36 hectares; today it covers 5.40 hectares.

What grows in the reserve

The protected multi-species riparian forest is a forest community typical of areas regularly flooded by the river, with trees that tolerate a high groundwater level well. The available sources do not give a list of species or the age of the individual stands.
