Leonardo da Vinci Park

Wrocław
About Leonardo da Vinci Park

A neighbourhood park in Gądów Mały with a sculpture of Vitruvian Man and elements inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's inventions.

Leonardo da Vinci Park lies in the western part of Wrocław, in Gądów Mały, in the block formed by Drzewieckiego, Bajana and Hynka streets and bulwar Dedala. It covers 2.44 hectares and was created in 1977 as part of a housing estate.

A nod to an aviation past

The park refers to the aviation history of this area, where the Gądów Mały airport and a drill square used to be. This theme is visible in the layout of bulwar Ikara and bulwar Dedala and in elements highlighting Leonardo da Vinci's aviation ideas.

What you will see

The park contains a sculpture of Vitruvian Man and adaptations of other works by Leonardo da Vinci. There are also devices inspired by his inventions, including flying machines and a swinging pendulum swing, as well as an outdoor gym, a willow tunnel and a barbecue area.

How the park got its current form

The idea for the park's present shape was born in 2017 on the initiative of local residents, led by Grzegorz Szorstki. It was supported by the Student Research Group at the Institute of Landscape Architecture at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. The concept for the 2018 participatory budget was prepared by Danuta Biedroń and Anna Freus, and the detailed designs were developed by Margareta Jarczewska. It was implemented as interconnected circular paths with pergolas and benches at the intersections. The park is being expanded on an ongoing basis.

A place in the estate's green corridor

The park occupies the middle section of a green corridor running east-west through the estate, planned since the 1970s, from Gądowski Park, past the Church of Divine Mercy and Fr Leszek Jabłoński Square, to the Church of St Maximilian Kolbe. Its irregular layout is shaped by blocks of flats from different decades, from the 1970s to the 21st century. On the eastern side of the park rises a small hill, probably formed from earth excavated for the foundations of the Gądów Mały estate.

Nearby

Within a few kilometres, closer to the centre of Wrocław, are the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław and Wrocław Zoo.
