A fenced square in the Huby neighbourhood of Wrocław with a miniature traffic town and playground, named after the creator of Esperanto.
Ludwik Zamenhof Square lies in the Huby neighbourhood within the Krzyki district of Wrocław, between Kamienna, Łódzka and Wieczysta streets. It is a small, fenced square of about 0.3 hectares, laid out as a miniature traffic town with a children's playground.
Before it received its current name in 1961, the square changed its name several times. Until 1933 it bore the name of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, as Kantplatz, from 1933 to 1945 it was called Göringplatz, and in the first post-war years it functioned as Plac Trójkątny (Triangular Square) - after the characteristic triangular shape of the plot.
Ludwik Zamenhof (1859-1917) was an ophthalmologist born in Białystok, the creator of Esperanto - an artificial language conceived as a common means of communication between nations. He died in Warsaw.
The square is fenced, and within it a miniature traffic town has been arranged, where children can practise cycling along marked, signposted paths, as well as a playground. The square is maintained by the Municipal Green Spaces Board in Wrocław.
