About Millennium Bridge

A cable-stayed bridge over the Oder in Wrocław from 2004, linking Popowice with Osobowice as part of the inner ring road.

The Millennium Bridge, also called the Bridge of the Millennium, is a cable-stayed road bridge over the Oder in Wrocław, linking the districts of Popowice and Osobowice. It forms part of the city's inner ring road and of national road 5 and European route E261.

When it was built

The bridge was opened to traffic on 29 October 2004. Its designer was Piotr Wanecki, with Marek Jagiełło as lead designer.

Construction and parameters

The Millennium Bridge has a total length, including viaducts, of 923.5 metres, while the actual span over the river measures 289 metres. The main span, that is the one with the greatest length, is 153 metres long, the pylons rise to a height of 50 metres, and the structure's width is 25.12 metres. The bridge carries two dual carriageways, with pavements and cycle paths running along both sides. There are no tram tracks on it, but it is used by city buses.

A geographical curiosity

In the immediate vicinity of the bridge, on the embankment on the Osobowice side, the course of the 17th meridian of east longitude has been marked.

Practical information

  • The bridge links the districts of Popowice and Osobowice, over the Oder, in the northern part of Wrocław
  • Access by public transport (buses) or by bicycle along paths running alongside the carriageway
  • This is an active road route, so a walk along the bridge is more for the view than for leisure, unlike the city-centre promenades
