About Olympic Bridge

A modern, 700-metre road bridge over the Oder from 2023, along Aleja Wielkiej Wyspy, named after the nearby Wrocław Stadium.

Olympic Bridge is a crossing over the Oder in Wrocław, along Aleja Wielkiej Wyspy. It is one of the youngest bridges in the city - it opened on 23 December 2023, much later than the centrally located Grunwald Bridge or Tumski Bridge.

Origin of the name

The bridge originally carried the working name East Bridge. Its current name was given by the city council by resolution of 22 June 2023, after the nearby Wrocław Stadium, previously known as the Olympic Stadium.

Construction

The bridge is 700 m long and 24 m wide, and its deck covers an area of 13,845 m². It was built using the cantilever method, without temporary supports, using 2,100 tonnes of steel and 15,500 m³ of concrete. The crossing rests on fourteen piers and 800 piles driven to a depth of 6 to 9 metres. It was built between 2020 and 2023 as part of Aleja Wielkiej Wyspy, a project of the company Wrocławskie Inwestycje, forming part of Wrocław's inner city ring road.

What it connects

The bridge links the southern districts of Wrocław with areas on the other side of the Oder, in the north-east of the city. It carries one traffic lane in each direction, a cycle path, noise barriers between the carriageway and the pavement, and several viewpoints over the river.

Practical information

  • Location: the Oder, along Aleja Wielkiej Wyspy, Przedmieście Oławskie
  • Getting there: near the Wrocław Zoo and Afrykarium
  • What to expect: a modern road crossing with a pavement, cycle path and viewpoints over the Oder, with no tourist attractions on the bridge itself
