About Oratorium Muzyczne

A Baroque concert hall in the main building of the University of Wrocław, where Brahms and Paganini performed in the 19th century.

Oratorium Muzyczne, also known as Oratorium Marianum, is a Baroque hall within the main building of the University of Wrocław. Thanks to its excellent acoustics it has become one of Wrocław's leading music venues.

Built in the 18th century

The hall was built between 1728 and 1731 as part of the university's new building, erected after the earlier Jesuit Academy was transformed into a university.

Concerts by great names

In the 19th century, performers at the Oratorium Muzyczne included Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt, Niccolò Paganini, Anton Rubinstein and Henryk Wieniawski. The hall still holds an organ, or more precisely a chamber organ, by Adam Honorato Casparini from 1718, largely original.

Restored decor

The Baroque decor of the oratorium was restored at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, funded by the German-Polish Society of the University of Wrocław.

Practical information

  • The hall is located in the main building of the University of Wrocław, in the Old Town district.
  • Nearby are Wrocław Town Hall, the Market Square and the Archcathedral of St John the Baptist.
  • Since the oratorium is an active university concert hall, it is worth checking the rules and schedule for visits or attending concerts before a visit.
