About Pentecostal Church on Miła Street in Wrocław

The oldest of Wrocław's neo-Gothic churches, today home to a Pentecostal congregation of over 300 members.

The Pentecostal Church on Miła Street in Wrocław is the oldest of the city's neo-Gothic churches, today home to a congregation of over 300 members belonging to the Pentecostal Church.

History of the site

According to various sources, the first church on this site was built in 1826, or as early as 1722, as a funeral chapel for the nearby Church of the Holy Cross, in a cemetery that stood here at the time. It was a modest, half-timbered building dedicated to St Lawrence.

Building the present church

In 1858 or 1860 a new church in the neo-Gothic style was built on the site of the former chapel, to a design by Alexis Langer. The building retained its dedication to St Lawrence and served worshippers until the end of the Second World War.

Destruction and reconstruction

After the war the church stood without a roof or windows and fell into disrepair for over a decade. On 21 May 1960 it was taken over by Pentecostals, and on 8 January 1973 it formally became the property of the Pentecostal Church in Poland.

Architecture

The church has a single nave with three bays, and measures 15 metres in length, 7.5 metres in width and 20 metres in height. The tower on its western side is 35 metres high and is topped with an openwork stone spire.
