About Polski Square

A square in the Old Town in Wrocław with the Academy of Fine Arts, Wzgórze Polskie on the site of a former bastion, and the Promenada Staromiejska.

Polski Square lies in the Old Town in Wrocław, in the part known as the New Town, and takes the form of a hundred-metre street joining an adjacent, landscaped green square. It is a place where the history of the city's fortifications intertwines with today's Academy of Fine Arts and the promenading character of the riverside walk along the Oder.

From Ziegelplatz to Polski Square

The square's original German name, Ziegelplatz, referred to the nearby Bastion Ceglarski. From 1874 the square was called Kaiserin-Augusta-Platz, given after the unveiling of a monument dedicated to Empress Augusta, erected in 1870-1871. After the war the square received its present name, Polski Square.

Wzgórze Polskie on the site of the former bastion

Wzgórze Polskie, a viewpoint on the square, was created on the site of Bastion Ceglarski, a fortification dating from the turn of the 16th and 18th centuries. The city's fortifications were dismantled in 1807, giving the area its present, open shape. The bastion itself was entered in the heritage register under number A/5260/210 in 1970.

The Academy of Fine Arts on the square

The historic building of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts stands on the square. It originally housed the Royal School of Art and Crafts, opened in 1867. The present building was erected in 1866-1867 and extended in 1905; it was entered in the heritage register in 1986 under number A/2364/437/Wm.

Promenada Staromiejska

After the fortifications were dismantled in 1807, the Promenada Staromiejska was laid out along the former line of the ramparts, stretching today among other things along Bulwar Xawerego Dunikowskiego, in the form of a riverside park strip along the Oder, to which Polski Square is connected.
