Sarny Palace Complex

Ścinawka Górna
About Sarny Palace Complex

A Renaissance-Baroque palace of the von Götzen family in Sarny near Radków, today a restored residence with a hotel and a park designed by Eduard Petzold.

Sarny Palace Complex is a historic residence in the hamlet of Sarny, on the edge of Ścinawka Górna in Kłodzko County, built on an escarpment at the fork of the Włodzica and Ścinawka rivers. The German name of the building was Schloss Scharfeneck.

From manor house to palace

A modest fortified manor house stood on this spot as early as before the 15th century. The Renaissance, three-storey manor house was built in 1590 by Fabian von Reichenbach. It was later remodelled into a palace by the counts von Götzen, in 1661 and again in the first half of the 18th century. It was they who brought the residence to its period of greatest splendour. The building has five storeys and reaches almost 24.5 metres in height. The complex includes the main palace, a summer palace from 1730, a 17th-century granary and a gatehouse.

Chapel and frescoes

Within the grounds of the complex stands a chapel dedicated to St John of Nepomuk, built in 1722-1730 on an elliptical plan. Inside the palace, illusionistic frescoes from 1738 have survived, the work of Johann Franz Hoffmann of Kłodzko.

An English-style park

The park surrounding the palace was designed in 1880-1890 by Eduard Petzold, a highly regarded creator of landscape gardens. The park covers about 60 hectares and connects Sarny with the manor house in Włodowice. Nine natural monuments grow within it, including oaks between 230 and 410 years old. It is one of the better-preserved works by Petzold in Poland, and in 2020 the park was granted membership of the European Route of Historic Gardens.

Decline and rebuilding

After the Second World War the complex began to decline, housing among other things a State Livestock Breeding Enterprise. The greatest damage came in the years after 1989, when the state farm was liquidated and the summer palace was separated off and sold. The main building was at that time at risk of falling into ruin. Since 2013 the site has been cared for by the Sarny Manor Rebuilding Foundation, and renovation work has been under way since 2014. The gatehouse was the first to be reopened, in 2017, after a thorough renovation, and the granary's roof and tower have also been renovated.

The castle today

The restored complex now operates as a family residence and hotel, offering 26 rooms furnished within the historic buildings. On the grounds the Sala Kolumnowa (Column Hall) restaurant serves regional cuisine, and there is a café in the Gatehouse. The complex also has a concert hall and a parish, and the owners plan to establish a vineyard. The castle also hosts the Góry Literatury (Mountains of Literature) Festival, the largest summer literary festival in Poland.

Nearby

Nearby it is worth climbing Góra Świętej Anny in the Włodzickie Hills, or the viewpoint on Góra Wszystkich Świętych. Enthusiasts of regional history can travel to Nowa Ruda, where the Mining Museum operates.
