Semi-Detached House at Zielonego Dębu 23/25 Street in Wrocław

The semi-detached house at Zielonego Dębu 23/25 Street is one of six free-standing houses in the northern part of the WUWA (Wohnung und Werkraum - "Living and Workplace") exhibition estate, a showcase of modern residential building from 1929 in Wrocław's Dąbie district. It was designed by Paul Häusler for the company Siedlungsgesellschaft Breslau A.G., and construction ran from March to June of that same year.

A house for two families

The building is a semi-detached house made up of two identically laid-out dwellings, each designed for a family of about seven people. On the street side two porches with separate entrances were added, while on the garden side each dwelling has its own loggia. The interior is divided into a living area on the ground floor, with a kitchen, dining room and living room, and a night-time area on the upper floor with bedrooms and a bathroom.

A simple, undecorated form

The house's form is a cuboid covered with a flat roof, without decoration, like most of the buildings of the WUWA exhibition, which was meant to promote modern, functional residential building. The walls were built of brick 44 centimetres thick, with the cavity filled with slag for insulation.

Heritage protection

Both parts of the building were listed on the heritage register under numbers A/1656/374/Wm and A/1657/375/Wm, on 18 January 1979.

Practical information

This is a residential building, so it can only be viewed from the outside, from the street. The house is next to the exhibition grounds of the Centennial Hall, less than a kilometre away.

In the same area it is also worth visiting the Japanese Garden, laid out on the grounds of the neighbouring park.
