About Śliwice Palace

A Renaissance palace from the 16th century in Śliwice near Wrocław, today secured against entry and inaccessible to visitors.

Śliwice Palace stands in the village of Śliwice in Wrocław County, a dozen or so kilometres east of central Wrocław. It is a Renaissance building from the 16th century, extended over the following centuries, today secured against entry and inaccessible to visitors.

History and rebuilding

The oldest part of the palace was built between 1550 and 1590 as a Renaissance residence. In the 19th century the building was extended in the classicist style, and at the beginning of the 20th century Art Nouveau elements were added, including a round tower topped with a pinnacle bearing a ball and spire, attached at the corner of the building. Until 1945 the palace served as a count's residence. Under communist rule the estate was taken over by the State Agricultural Farm, and flats for the enterprise's workers were arranged in the residence.

Current condition

Before 2006 the tenants were relocated, and the property passed into the hands of a private owner. In 2008 renovation work was carried out, including the replacement of part of the ceilings and the roof covering, but the work was halted before 2014. Since then the palace has stood secured against entry, unused, and has gradually been deteriorating. There is no activity here open to visitors.

Conservation protection

The palace complex in Śliwice is entered in the heritage register under number 231/A03/1-3, dated 3 November 2003. The complex also includes a park dating from the second half of the 18th century, reshaped after 1870.
