St Christopher's Square

Wrocław
About St Christopher's Square

A square in Wrocław's Old Town with the Evangelical St Christopher's Church, first mentioned in the mid-15th century.

St Christopher's Square lies within the Old Town in Wrocław, between Kazimierza Wielkiego Street and Dominikański Square. For several centuries it has been marked by the Evangelical church of the same dedication standing here, and the square itself changed function from a market to a green area before taking on its present, reduced shape.

St Christopher's Church

The church dedicated to St Christopher was already mentioned in the mid-15th century, and the dedication itself was granted in 1343 at the request of the furriers' guild. In the 1530s the church was taken over by Protestants and has served the Evangelical faith ever since. During the siege of Wrocław in 1945 the building was about 75 percent destroyed; after the war it was rebuilt and repeatedly renovated. Services were also held here in German.

A palace and old tenement houses

By the square stands the Oppersdorff and Lamberg Palace at Wierzbowa Street 30, built in 1714-1720, as well as historic bank and service buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the area is completed by a small green square.

From marketplace to green square

In the 12th century an open settlement operated here, and later the site served as a cemetery. In the 1860s the square served as a marketplace, and in 1879 a grain trading hall was erected on it. In the 1880s the place was converted into municipal green space. After 1945 the area of the square was reduced by the construction of the W-Z Route, today's Kazimierza Wielkiego Street.

From here it is close to the Town Hall and the Market Square, and in the other direction to the Panorama of the Battle of Racławice.
