St George's Church

Wrocław
About St George's Church

A Neo-Romanesque church from 1905 in Popowice, rebuilt after wartime destruction, today a filial church of the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

St George's Church in Wrocław is a small Catholic church in the Popowice district, built in 1905. It used to be the parish church of the parish of the same dedication, and since 1991 it has been a filial church of the parish of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

History of the building

The church was designed by architect Theodor Pluschka as a brick chapel dedicated to St George. It was raised to the rank of parish on 25 May 1914, and in 1928 care of it was taken over by the Oblate Fathers.

Destruction and reconstruction

During the siege of Festung Breslau in 1945 the church was seriously damaged - the roof, windows and interior were among the parts destroyed. Reconstruction was carried out by the Oblates from 1952, and was completed in 1953, when the church was reconsecrated on 13 June.

Architecture

It is a small, single-nave Neo-Romanesque building measuring 10 by 20 metres, built of brick, with a gable roof. It has a semicircular apse on the north side and a porch on the south side. The interior was originally covered with a barrel vault, later replaced with an elliptical wooden ceiling.
