A peatland reserve covering 11.83 ha in the Kunice municipality near Legnica, protecting fen peatlands and forests with 558 plant species.
The Torfowisko Kunickie Nature Reserve lies in the Kunice municipality, in Legnica County, west of the village of Kunice and north-east of Legnica.
The area was under protection from 1923 until the end of the war. Reserve protection was restored again in 1996. The aim of the protection is to preserve, for scientific and educational purposes, marsh plant communities and peat deposits.
The protected area covers 11.83 hectares of forests and fen peatlands, which formed as a result of the natural shallowing of a lake that once existed here. A total of 558 plant species have been recorded here - 267 algae, 32 mosses and 259 vascular plants - including several protected species: guelder rose, alder buckthorn, Loesel's twayblade, black currant, round-leaved sundew, common spotted-orchid and broad-leaved marsh orchid.
Sedimentation of the lake deposits here proceeded undisturbed, which means the peatland is a good source of knowledge about the history of the local flora going back to the last glaciation. The reserve area is subject to active protection.
Towards Legnica, within a few kilometres, are the Legnica Municipal Park, the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, Piast Castle in Legnica and the Ponikwa Nature Reserve.
