About Turów Lignite Mine

An operating open-cast lignite mine in Zgorzelec County, an industrial plant not open to visitors.

The "Turów" Lignite Mine is an operating open-cast mine in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, run by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna SA, KWB Turów Branch. The extraction area covers the former settlement of Turoszów.

An operating industrial plant

This is a working extraction plant, not a tourist attraction open for visiting. Extraction is carried out by the open-cast method, that is in an open pit rather than in underground galleries. The available sources make no mention of any viewpoint, exhibition or visitor route on the site of the mine itself.

The scale of the pit

The extraction area covers the site of the former settlement of Turoszów, which gave way to the mine's expansion. The scale of this type of open-cast lignite mine means they are visible from a great distance, which explains why a separate viewpoint over the pit and the neighbouring power station has been created nearby.

Practical information

  • The mine lies in Zgorzelec County, near Bogatynia
  • The pit and the power station operating alongside it can be viewed from a separate viewpoint described in the portal under View of the Mine and Power Station
  • The site of the mine itself is an industrial plant with no access open to visitors
