Wałbrzych Market Square

Wałbrzych
About Wałbrzych Market Square

Wałbrzych's oldest square with historic 18th-century tenement houses, a former marketplace and a fountain from the 1996 redevelopment.

Wałbrzych Market Square is the town's oldest central square, located in the city centre at the junction of Sienkiewicza, Gdańska, 1 Maja, Kościuszki, Moniuszki and św. Jadwigi streets. It has a rectangular shape and for centuries served as the main trading square.

History of the square

Between 1731 and 1853 a baroque town hall stood in the middle of the square. In 1905 the square looked different from today: it was a green area with a monument to Emperor Frederick III and fountains on the sides. For years weekly markets were held on the square. In 1996 the square underwent a redevelopment: the surface was changed, trees were planted, benches were installed and a new fountain was built.

Tenement houses around the square

The square's frontages are formed by historic tenement houses. The tenement house at number 3 is the oldest on the Wałbrzych market square and dates from 1727. The Anchor House was built in 1799, and the Three Roses House in 1777. The Four Atlantes House, erected between 1791 and 1793 in the classicist style, today houses the town library.

The square today

Next to the Circular Passage leading to Magistracki Square there are beer gardens, shops and restaurants. The square can be reached, among other ways, via Gdańska and Sienkiewicza streets.
