A historic meteorological column from the 1880s on Świdnicka street, with a clock, barometer, thermometer and anemometer.
The Weather Column is a small meteorological column on Świdnicka street in Wrocław, on its eastern side, at the junction with Promenada Staromiejska, near the former guardhouse (Odwach).
It's not a billboard post, but a structure built specifically for measuring the weather. It takes the form of a sandstone turret, classicist in form and square in plan, with a glazed interior space and a mast on top. The column houses measuring instruments: a clock at the top, a Wild-type anemometer on the mast, a barometer measuring atmospheric pressure, and a thermometer showing the current temperature.
The weather column was built in the 1880s, at the point where Wrocław's main shopping street crossed the old town park. This location and form of small architecture reflected 19th-century compositions known from spa towns, where meteorological columns informed strollers about weather conditions. The structure underwent thorough conservation work in 1984-1985.
The weather column stands right in the heart of Wrocław, so it naturally combines with visiting the Market Square and the nearby Wrocław Town Hall. It's also close to the Wrocław Opera and the National Forum of Music.
