The Georgian State Ballet APKHAZETI performs with a choir and a live orchestra. The show combines tradition with modernity, with dance as its main means of expression. Movement, rhythm and emotion create a performance that goes beyond the framework of a classic concert.
The ensemble was founded in 1931. For almost a hundred years it has performed for audiences around the world, presenting Georgian tradition. In 1992, during the war in Abkhazia, its activity was forcibly moved to Tbilisi, yet the ensemble remained on stage. In 2021 Bachana Chanturia became artistic director. Under his leadership, APKHAZETI combines traditional folklore with contemporary dance and original music by leading composers of the Georgian music scene.
The result of this change is the show “Choreonicon”. Traditional musical motifs sound different here thanks to the live orchestra, and the dance tells Georgian stories and emotions.
The programme includes dance pieces from various regions of Georgia, with acrobatic elements. The men's parts stand out for their strength and dynamism, while the women's are marked by subtlety and elegance. The choir, orchestra and colourful costumes complete the performance. The creators describe APKHAZETI as a blend of ethnicity, ballet and modernity.
