Bomsori Kim (violin) and Rafał Blechacz (piano) will perform a joint recital featuring four sonatas and works for violin and piano by Debussy, Paderewski, Franck and Szymanowski.
Rafał Blechacz won the gold medal at the Chopin Competition in 2005. South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim drew attention with her performance at the Wieniawski Competition in 2016. Soon after, the two began performing together and recorded an album released by Deutsche Grammophon.
The programme includes:
The concert opens with Claude Debussy’s short Sonata in G minor, a late work completed in 1917. The composer was initially proud of it, but he soon changed his mind. In a letter to a friend, he called it “a document and an example of what a sick man can create in wartime.” In hindsight, these words are seen as unfair, as the piece, with its subtle colours and shimmering texture, quickly won the admiration of performers and audiences. Ignacy Jan Paderewski’s Sonata in A minor, Op. 13, was written in the 1880s and dedicated to the Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Paderewski is remembered mainly as a piano virtuoso, but he also composed for other instruments. Many scholars consider this work the finest piece from his early period. It is written in a Romantic style, with lyrical melodies and strong emotions.
César Franck’s Sonata in A major, composed in 1886, is one of the most popular examples of the genre. It was written as a wedding gift for the Belgian virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. The composer did not attend the wedding, held in September that year in Arlon, but asked a mutual friend, Charles Bordes, to deliver the manuscript to the groom
