“Love as If It Were the Last Time” is a play from the Love Stories series, produced by Teatr Garnizon Sztuki. The characters are Cal and Beth, a married couple of nearly twenty years. Beth has put their house up for sale and hung a “For Sale” banner in the garden, although Cal is happy here and does not want to move. They are visited by Ellie and Skip, who have just become engaged, and later Liz and Mike join them. After forty years together, Liz and Mike have little left to say to each other. What seems like an ordinary visit takes an unexpected turn when the couples realize that something connects them and that the meeting is no coincidence. The atmosphere thickens, and the situation spirals out of control.
Teatr Garnizon Sztuki wants to give audiences room to pause and reflect on what truly matters in a world full of divisions, hurry, and noise. The play aims to show that lasting feelings are built on small gestures, simple words, and seemingly trivial moments. Director Ewa Konstancja Bułhak says: “Jeff Gould’s brilliant text lets us look at our relationships with distance and a touch of irony. It also reminds us that a relationship is a process in which we must allow ourselves to make mistakes, because they teach us and help us grow.” Psychologist and journalist Małgorzata Ohme once heard from her grandmother: “You never know whether you are loving for the last time, but do everything to make sure it is...”. This sentence speaks to the courage to enter a relationship without a safety net, and to the idea that closeness is worth fighting for every day.
