“Postcards from Europe” is a comedy directed by Marcin Sławiński, written by Michael McKeever and translated by Bogusława Plisz-Góral. Its characters are members of one family, united by a lack of common sense. That doesn't stop them from being warm and likable people. The cast includes:
- Lucyna Malec – Mother
- Marek Siudym – Father
- Magdalena Wołłejko – Grandma
- Małgorzata Kocik – Aunt Ester
- Mateusz Łapka / Krystian Pesta – Artur Sutton
- Aleksandra Radwan / Karolina Charkiewicz – Gillian
Young, well-off Artur Sutton returns to his family home after several years of travelling around Europe. He arrives with Gillian, whom he met in Paris, to introduce her to his family. They are greeted by his mother, somewhat detached from reality, and his equally eccentric father, who plays golf at night in the garden with glowing balls and a hockey stick.
The meeting initially delights everyone, but soon it becomes clear that it's all a facade. It emerges that Grandma, who died a year earlier at the age of 97, is alive, and Aunt Ester runs a phone sex line. Artur has a twin brother he never mentioned. In the household chaos the dog gets lost and the maid Sheila disappears, while the house itself resembles the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But that's not all: the warm atmosphere of the home may be a facade protecting the family from too painful a reality. The play asks whether the returning son has the right to tear it down, and which is better: living with a difficult truth or enjoying the peace of an escape from reality.
Production credits: set and costume design – Zuzanna Markiewicz; set construction – Grzegorz Orłowski; music – Marcin Piękos; lighting design – Marcin Żaluk; make-up – Joanna Szołtysek; hair – Hairdresser Przemysław Grejcz. Produced by Joanna Cywińska Produkcje.
The performance at Miejski Ośrodek Kultury in Głogów is a proposal for audiences looking for a comedy with questions about family secrets.
