The story takes place in Warsaw at the end of the 19th century. Stanisław Wokulski, who made his fortune from war, returns home. He is in love with Izabela Łęcka and decides to enter high society to win her hand. Izabela comes from the aristocracy but faces financial ruin. Wokulski is supported by his friend Ignacy Rzecki, a romantic who watches with nostalgia as the world of ideals gives way to social ambition and the game of interests.
In aristocratic salons, every gesture can spark a scheme and every word can foreshadow betrayal. Rivals, unexpected alliances, and dramatic choices put Wokulski’s dreams and his faith in people to the test. Told with a contemporary sensibility, the film explores love and unfulfilled longing, aspiration and transformation, and a world that is coming to an end.
