“The Nightingale,” based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, is a Teatr Formalina production about sincere, selfless friendship that can survive even very difficult times. The story brings together a menacing Chinese emperor, a little nightingale from the forest, and Marshal “P.”
The tale is told with live music, including on the Chinese zither, and with original images shown in kamishibai theatre style. The performance also features a nightingale puppet that interacts with the youngest audience members, storyboards, and puppets of the animals the nightingale meets along the way. The story changes with each new image and sound. The whole is set in the atmosphere of distant China and a porcelain palace, into which the little nightingale brings a bit of song and freedom.
