The first screen adaptation of “The Witcher” returns to cinemas to mark the 25th anniversary of its premiere and the 40th anniversary of the Witcher universe!
Before CD Projekt Red released the first game set in the world created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and before Henry Cavill played Geralt in Netflix's big-budget series, there was our Polish film “The Witcher," directed by Marek Brodzki in 2001.
Geralt of Rivia, known as the White Wolf, is a witcher: a mutant trained from childhood to kill the monsters that plague people. His fate changes at a feast at Queen Calanthe's court in Cintra. When a fiancé for Princess Pavetta is about to be chosen, an armored knight known as Hedgehog strides into the hall. He demands the princess's hand under the old Law of Surprise. The queen refuses, swords are drawn, and Geralt steps in to defend the newcomer. In gratitude, Hedgehog promises him anything he asks, and the witcher, without knowing why, invokes the same law. From then on, his life is inseparably bound to a child not yet born: Ciri.
The Polish adaptation could not boast a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars or top-tier special effects, but it offered viewers an outstanding cast (led by Michał Żebrowski, Zbigniew Zamachowski and Grażyna Wolszczak) and a wonderful soundtrack by Grzegorz Ciechowski.
Now, a quarter century after its premiere, Marek Brodzki's film returns to the big screen to remind audiences that Poles are no slouches when it comes to fantasy, and we have our own “Witcher” on screen!
