Cemetery of the Holy Spirit in Wrocław

Wrocław
About Cemetery of the Holy Spirit in Wrocław

An active parish cemetery in Tarnogaj on Bardzka street, opened in 1918 as the Cemetery of St Henry, today dedicated to the Holy Spirit.

The Cemetery of the Holy Spirit has operated in Tarnogaj for over a hundred years and remains an active necropolis of the parish of the same name. It covers more than 8 hectares on Bardzka street.

From the Cemetery of St Henry to the Holy Spirit

The cemetery opened in 1918 as the Cemetery of St Henry, after a decision to establish it taken a year earlier. It was designed by architect Theo Effenberger. In 1929 it began serving several parishes at once. In 1978 it was handed over to the parish of the Holy Spirit and then changed its name to the present one. In 1999 it was extended eastward and the burial sections were reorganised.

Destruction and rebuilding

During the Second World War the cemetery was damaged, and gravestones were used, among other things, to build barricades. The post-war rebuilding included the cemetery chapel, destroyed during the fighting and rebuilt after the war. A Katyn Cross also stands on the cemetery grounds as a separate memorial object.
