A group of sculptures of slaughter animals on Stare Jatki lane in Wrocław's Old Town, recalling the butcher's shops that operated here from 1242.
The "In Honour of Slaughtered Animals" monument is a group of sculptures of slaughter animals standing on Stare Jatki lane in Wrocław's Old Town, near the Market Square. The work recalls the role that butcher's shops played on this spot for centuries.
From 1242, butcher's shops, or "jatki", clustered along this lane. It is from them that the whole street, and in time the whole quarter of the Old Town, took the name Stare Jatki (Old Shambles). The monument refers directly to this centuries-old tradition of the butcher's craft in this place.
The figures of slaughter animals were created gradually between 1997 and 2017. Authorship of the individual sculptures is described as collective, with no single creator named as responsible for the whole group.
