About Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland in Węgliniec

A former Protestant church from 1878 in Węgliniec, Catholic since 1947, known to residents as the railway church.

The Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland in Węgliniec, known to residents as the railway church, dates from 1878 and originally served as a Protestant church. Today it is a filial church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Węgliniec and remains in use.

From a Protestant church to a Catholic one

In 1947 the building was taken over by Catholics. The church was consecrated together with the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa and given its present dedication. Care of the church was taken mainly by railway workers, which is where its colloquial name comes from.

Architecture

The building combines Neo-Gothic and Neo-Romanesque features with a modernist tower. It has a single-nave interior with a distinct, polygonal chancel, and a sacristy next to the tower.

Recent renovations

The church has been renovated several times. In 2003-2004 a sound system and stained-glass windows were installed, and the clock and illumination were replaced. In 2009-2010 the plaster and paintwork were renewed, and the lighting, pulpit and Stations of the Cross were replaced. In 2012, using EU funds as well as funds from Zgorzelec County and Węgliniec municipality, the roof was replaced with beaver-tail tiles, and a year later a new electrical installation was fitted.
