General Władysław Anders Park in Wrocław

Wrocław
About General Władysław Anders Park in Wrocław

A city park in the Huby district, established in 1975 on the site of former cemeteries, with old avenues of trees.

General Władysław Anders Park in Wrocław lies in the Huby district, in the area of Kamienna, Borowska, Ślężna and Wieczysta streets, at Kamienna 77. The park covers 6.13 hectares and was created in 1975 through voluntary community labour, on the site of former cemeteries.

Site of former cemeteries

Before the park was created, the site was occupied by the cemeteries of the parishes of Corpus Christi, St Dorothy, St Mary Magdalene, St Maurice and the Evangelical Reformed Church. The cemeteries still appeared on city maps from 1930, and their fences and gravestones were demolished in 1945.

Earlier, from 1346, the village of Nowa Wieś lay on this site, renamed Glinianki in 1353. In 1744 half of the area was named Huby, and its residents worked as vegetable growers. Huby was incorporated into Wrocław in 1868, and the first cemetery was established here in 1862.

Traces of the cemeteries in the layout of paths

The network of paths in the park recalls the layout found in cemeteries. The park was designed by the gardener Johannes Erbe. There are two playgrounds in the central part of the site.

The park's greenery

Characteristic are the avenues of common horse chestnuts and broad-leaved limes, alongside which grow common hornbeams, an Oriental plane, maples, black locusts, birches and weeping willows. The old trees here are largely a trace of the former cemeteries, where avenue trees were planted along the main paths. Red squirrels can be found in the park.

Part of the green wedge

The park is an element of the green belt known as the southern route, or green wedge, together with Anders Hill, Mała Sobótka, Skowroni Park and Southern Park, under a resolution of Wrocław City Council of 23 November 1996. The park's current name has been in force under a separate resolution of Wrocław City Council of 9 October 1993, concerning the names of parks and wooded areas in Wrocław.

The nearest attractions are Wrocław Aquapark and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Towards the city centre lies the Wrocław Opera, and further on the Old Town with the Market Square.
