Głogów Town Hall

Rynek 10, Głogów
About Głogów Town Hall

A town hall on Głogów's market square, rebuilt after the war, with an 80-metre tower and a viewing terrace.

Głogów Town Hall has stood on this same spot since the end of the 13th century, when a watchtower was built here after the town's founding by Konrad I of Głogów. Today's structure is the result of several rebuildings, fires and one of the longest reconstructions in the region, carried out after the Second World War.

From Gothic to Renaissance

In 1349 a two-wing brick town hall was built in Głogów. The building was damaged by major fires in 1420, 1433 and 1574. After the 1574 fire it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, of brick walls, and the authorities later entered it in the register of immovable heritage monuments of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship as a building dated to the first half of the 16th century, serving as a town hall.

A 19th-century rebuilding

A further thorough rebuilding took place between 1823 and 1835 to a design by architect A. Soller. It was then that the building gained the form largely recreated during its post-war reconstruction.

Destruction and a long reconstruction

In 1945 the town hall was seriously damaged and gutted by fire. Reconstruction was not undertaken until 1984, and the building work lasted 18 years. Since 2002 the building has once again served the town's residents and houses the municipal office.

Observation tower

The town hall tower is 80.35 metres high, making it the tallest town hall tower in Silesia and the second tallest in Poland. The viewing terrace is at a height of 47.07 metres. A local radio station, Radio Elka Głogów, also broadcasts from the tower, on frequency 89.6 MHz.

Practical information

  • Address: Rynek 10, Głogów.
  • The town hall stands at the central point of Głogów's market square, close to the Castle of the Dukes of Głogów and the Bridge of Tolerance.
  • The building serves as the seat of the municipal office, so it is worth checking access to the interiors and the viewing terrace before a visit.
