A cemetery in Grabiszyn-Grabiszynek where 1016 Italian soldiers taken prisoner after the Battle of Caporetto in 1917 are buried.
The Italian Soldiers' Cemetery in Wrocław lies in the Grabiszyn-Grabiszynek district, on the site of the former Grabiszyn Cemetery (section III), and covers 0.5 hectares. It was established in 1927-1928 entirely with funds from the Italian government, and was consecrated on 2 November 1928.
1016 people are buried in the cemetery - mainly Italian soldiers who were taken prisoner by the Germans after Italy's defeat in the Battle of Caporetto on 24 October 1917 and died in prisoner-of-war camps in the eastern regions of Germany. In 1943-1944 twenty Italian civilian workers were also buried here, and later soldiers killed during the siege of Wrocław in 1945.
After 1957 the Italian authorities exhumed the remains of those buried in 1943-1944 and moved them to the Italian Military Cemetery in Warsaw. After the neighbouring section of Grabiszyn Cemetery was closed in 1963, the surrounding area was transformed into Grabiszyński Park, which today surrounds the necropolis on every side.
The cemetery has heritage status and is no longer active - no new burials take place here. The site is cared for by the city of Wrocław.
