About Korn Palace in Pawłowice

A historic family palace of the Korn family from 1895 in Wrocław's Pawłowice district, surrounded by a 7.2-hectare park, today used by the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

Korn Palace in Pawłowice (German: Schloss Pawelwitz) stands in Wrocław's Pawłowice district, surrounded by a park where it is easy to forget you are within the boundaries of a large city. It is a historic family residence from the late 19th century, today adapted for educational and conference purposes.

From a monastic farmstead to a family seat

The land on which the palace stands was originally a farmstead belonging to the Monastery of St Vincent in Wrocław. In 1891 the estate was bought by Heinrich Korn and turned into a family seat. The palace itself was built in 1895. On the building's front, the coats of arms of Heinrich von Korn and his wife Helena, née von Eichborn, who founded the palace, can still be seen today.

The building's architecture

The palace is one of the latest buildings in Wrocław kept in the northern Renaissance style. It is topped with a tall mansard roof with dormer windows, and at the front rises a projecting bay crowned with a pediment bearing a heraldic cartouche. On one side of the building stands a two-storey tower, a characteristic element of the whole complex.

The park around the palace

The palace is surrounded by a well-kept park covering 7.2 hectares. It contains a pond of 0.4 hectares, a stone bridge with a basket-arch vault, and a gloriette. A walk through the park can be treated as a separate part of the visit, regardless of viewing the building itself from the outside.

What the palace houses today

The palace and the surrounding park belong to the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. The building houses a Centre for Continuing Education, and it is also home to a conference centre, a hotel and a restaurant. It is a place in everyday use, not a museum, so visiting the interiors depends on the venue's current availability.

Nearby

From Pawłowice it is a short distance to other points on this side of Wrocław, including Kilimanjaro Hill and the Piastowski Brewery. Towards the centre it is also worth visiting the Medicinal Plant Garden of the Medical University in Wrocław and St Lawrence's Cemetery in Wrocław.
