About Lubań Bridge

A 19th-century bridge from 1861 on national road no. 30 in Lubań, the oldest active bridge on the road network managed by GDDKiA.

Lubań Bridge is a 19th-century crossing on national road no. 30, leading over the right-bank mill race, a branch of the Kwisa that skirts a former mill. It is only 7.90 metres long, but that is precisely what makes it stand out most: it is the oldest bridge structure still in use on the roads managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

Construction and age

The bridge was built in 1861. More than a century and a half later it still serves its original purpose, carrying road traffic over the span of the Kwisa bypass channel, once used to direct water to the nearby mill.

What it crosses

The crossing does not run over the main river, but over its artificial branch, the mill bypass channel, formerly used to power water-driven equipment. The bridge itself is part of national road no. 30 running through Lubań.

A place in the history of technology

Its status as the oldest active bridge on the national road network gives it significance beyond Lubań itself - it is a rare example of 19th-century road infrastructure that has survived to this day in everyday use, not merely as an exhibit.

Nearby

A walk around Lubań can be combined with a visit to the Regional Museum in Lubań and the Synagogue in Lubań, and a few hundred metres further on is the Kamienna Góra Park. It is also worth calling at the Jewish Cemetery in Lubań, which lies about the same distance from the bridge.

Practical information

  • The bridge lies on national road no. 30 in Lubań, over a branch of the Kwisa
  • A road structure, freely accessible, with no set visiting hours
  • It is a short crossing (under 8 metres), worth a brief stop while touring the centre of Lubań
