A castle-and-palace complex from the 14th-17th centuries in the centre of Międzylesie, open to visitors with a guide.
Międzylesie Castle stands on Plac Wolności, in the centre of the small town, in Kłodzko County. It's a castle-and-palace complex made up of three wings: a medieval-Renaissance castle wing and two Baroque palace wings.
The first defensive building was erected here in 1370, on the site of an earlier fortified settlement, as the seat of the Glaubitz family. It was destroyed during the Hussite Wars. The Tschirnhaus family rebuilt the site between 1580 and 1590 as a Renaissance manor, probably using surviving elements of the medieval tower. Two further wings, the southern and eastern, were added between 1614 and 1622, and between 1684 and 1695 the Althann family, who had taken over the entail in 1653, extended the residence with a Baroque palace wing.
The complex is listed in the register of immovable heritage monuments under numbers 468 from 10 October 1957 and A/5241/468 from 12 May 2011. The interiors of the palace part have barrel vaults with stucco decoration, and the façades are adorned with Renaissance portals featuring heraldic motifs and sgraffito decoration. In 1974 a fire damaged the residential section, though the complex as a whole survived the post-war period largely without damage.
The castle is open to visitors with a guide, who tells the story of the building's several centuries of history. It's worth checking the current opening hours and visiting rules before a visit, as they may vary by season.
On the same square stands the Marian Column in Międzylesie, and a few hundred metres away, the St John Paul II's Church in Międzylesie. Fans of Lower Silesian castles can also travel from here to Szczerba Castle.
