A monument commemorating the insurgents of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, unveiled in 1963 on a square on Psie Budy Street in Wrocław.
The Monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto in Wrocław commemorates the insurgents of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It stands on a square on Psie Budy Street, near Bohaterów Getta Square, in the Old Town.
The monument was created on the initiative of Wrocław activists of the Social and Cultural Society of Jews. It was unveiled on the evening of 19 April 1963, on the twentieth anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The ceremony was preceded by a tattoo with an honour company of the Polish People's Army, which marched from the Market Square to Bohaterów Getta Square.
The monument consists of two elements: a vertical slab 70 centimetres high bearing the inscription "1943 19 April 1963", and a horizontal black granite plaque. The plaque carries a bilingual inscription, in Polish and Yiddish, reading: "To the heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto, fighters for our freedom and yours - the people of Wrocław."
The monument originally stood in the central part of Bohaterów Getta Square. In the mid-1970s, during the construction of the W-Z Route, two carriageways and a tram track took up most of the square's surface. For this reason the monument was moved from the central part of the square to a green area near the tenement houses on Psie Budy Street, where it stands today. This is a different site from Bohaterów Getta Square itself, although it bears the same patron's name.
