About Monument to the Victims of Kristallnacht

A granite matzevah at the junction of Łąkowa and Druckiego-Lubeckiego streets in Wrocław, unveiled in 1998 on the site of the burned New Synagogue.

The Monument to the Victims of Kristallnacht stands in Wrocław at the junction of Łąkowa and Druckiego-Lubeckiego streets, on the site where the New Synagogue stood until 9 November 1938.

The site of the burned synagogue

The New Synagogue was burned down during Kristallnacht in 1938. The foundation stone for the monument was laid on 8 November 1996, on the 58th anniversary of that event, and the monument itself was unveiled on 9 November 1998.

A matzevah with an image of the synagogue

The monument takes the form of a three-part granite matzevah (Jewish gravestone). It bears an image of the synagogue, the dates of its existence (1872-1938), and inscriptions in three languages: German, Polish and Hebrew.
