About Museum of Household Appliances

A museum in the historic town hall in Ziębice with collections of household equipment, Silesian crafts and paintings by Joseph Langer, known since 2023 as the Museum of the Silesian House.

The Museum of the Silesian House in Ziębice, known until the end of 2022 as the Museum of Household Appliances, occupies the historic town hall on the Ziębice market square. It is the only institution in Poland that specialised in collections of domestic household equipment, alongside a collection of Silesian crafts and regional art.

History and name change

The museum has operated since 1931. Until the 1970s it had a typically regional character. In 1973, as the only museum in Poland, it adopted a specialisation in household appliances and maintained it until 31 December 2022, combining the function of a specialist museum with that of a regional museum. Since 1 January 2023 the institution has been known as the Museum of the Silesian House, a name that better reflects the character of its collections.

Household equipment collections

The core of the former specialisation consists of irons from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, refrigerators and washing machines from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and brass and copper vessels from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.

Silesian crafts and art

Alongside the household equipment, the museum shows collections of Silesian decorative crafts: furniture from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, and vessels and cutlery from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. The art collection, mainly Silesian, includes sacred sculpture from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century and painting from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. A separate place is given to a collection of paintings by Joseph Langer, a Silesian painter born in Ziębice, who lived from 1865 to 1918.

Permanent exhibitions

The permanent exhibition includes, among others, a collection of Silesian sacred sculpture, a collection of military and hunting weapons, both edged and firearms, from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a bourgeois kitchen from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an ethnographic room, a collection of irons spanning four centuries, a Baroque parlour from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a bourgeois Biedermeier-style parlour from the first half of the nineteenth century, and a section devoted to the history of Ziębice under its former German name, Münsterberg. The museum is open free of charge on Wednesdays.

Housed in a historic town hall

The museum is housed in the historic town hall building on the Ziębice market square. It is in this historic building, rather than a separate museum building, that all the collections described above can be seen, from household equipment to the paintings of Joseph Langer.
